Van Hire Fulham
All you need to know about hiring a van in Fulham
Situated in southwest London on the north bank of the River Thames, Fulham is part of the London borough of Hammersmith and Fulham. It lies between Hammersmith, Kensington and Chelsea and across the River from Putney, Wandsworth and Battersea.
Fulham has come a long way since its beginnings. Once a swamp and marshland, it was home to more waterfowl than people, and its name likely comes from the Saxon ‘Fullenhame’, meaning the resort or habitation of birds. Whilst the 19th century saw more urbanisation as outside hamlets were pulled into the area, houses were built and transport links such as bridges and railway lines were constructed.
For the first half of the twentieth century, Fulham was predominantly a working-class area with the gentry occupying ‘pockets’ of the area towards the north end, especially around Parsons Green. The brewing industry still pulled many workers along with the newer motor and aviation industries, with companies like Rolls Royce and Rover having establishments in the area. Extensive restoration between the Second World War and the 1980s though contributed to its rise, and today, you’ll find that Fulham is an upmarket area, full of boutiques and drinking, and booming house prices.
Transport links for Fulham are good. It’s situated in Zone 2 on the London Underground, with tube stations like Putney Bridge, Parsons Green and Fulham Broadway servicing the city via the District line. Wandsworth and Putney Bridge give access to the south side of the River and the A4 going into the city is also not far. Fulham also sits outside the main Congestion Charging Zone, but within the Ultra Low Emission Zone, so bear this in mind if you are considering driving.
Whilst Fulham is served well by public transport links, there are many reasons you may find yourself driving here. One of the downsides to Fulham is that it is a busy area, and the main Fulham Road can be a bit of a nightmare. With two major Football clubs located in Fulham – Fulham FC and Chelsea FC – matchdays are also to be avoided, as the roads become even busier with fan traffic and crowd control restrictions in place.
As mentioned, Fulham sits within the ULEZ, but it’s also part of the Traffic, Congestion and Pollution Reduction (TCPR) scheme. This pioneering scheme keeps streets open where other schemes close them. These are then dedicated to residents and their visitors using the latest smart camera technology, to allow only residents and their visitors, deliveries, and contractors, to access all areas freely. The scheme has been so successful in cutting numbers of out-of-borough drivers that it is due to be extended, so keep an eye out for any new road signs showing where you are and are not allowed to go. Rest assured though, 99% of the area still remains accessible without crossing any camera control points.
